Department of Children and Youth
Access to quality education for all children. Our systems continue to tie education funding to property taxes, thus poor communities have underfunded schools – while wealthy communities have abundance. The spread between continues to grow as our supposed “market” isn’t accessible to serving critical needs of the poor in day care, transportation, and wellness care. Our district has the highest number of single parent families with children in the city of Detroit.
Our children are living through present day trauma with immense changes and challenges with technology evolving rapidly; our worldwide food supply is nutritionally challenged; our environment has become more caustic with pollution; and the social stresses of these combined issues. Additionally the threat of police violence in poor communities has been escalating at pandemic proportions.
Inspiration
The concept for a US Department of Children and Youth traces back through the work of Marianne Williamson. For a detailed description of the need for a FEDERAL department click here to view her website’s information. I will be working on establishing a Department of Children and Youth when in office.
